Use a Non-Slip Pad
One of the easiest solutions for sliding cushions is the use of a non-slip pad. By placing a non-slip material underneath your cushion, you create friction and prevent the cushions from moving around. In addition, you don’t need to add or modify your couch or cushions in any way to use this method. There are a few options available when it comes to non-slip padding. There are pads designed specifically for couch cushions. However, other types of non-slip padding will work as well. So if you have an extra rug pad laying around the house, feel free to measure and cut it to fit underneath your couch cushions. Even rubber drawer liners will work. Just be sure you have enough material to cover the bottom of the cushion to ensure it has a sufficient surface area to grip. Look for long pads, such as for rugs or those specifically designed for couches, or purchase a whole roll of non-slip material. This is a great option that allows you to cut the material to your couch’s size, as well as replace it when the material begins to wear out.
Attach Hook and Loop Anchor
Hook and loop anchor strips, commonly known by the brand name Velcro, is another popular solution for stopping sliding cushions, especially if you’re looking to keep couch back cushions in place as well. Some couches even come with hook and loop strips already attached to the frame of the couch and the seat or back cushions. If you shop for Velcro strips, those backed with fabric adhesive are the easiest option for attaching to your couch. However, you could also sew hook-and-loop strips onto the couch. Keep in mind this may not be an option for leather upholstered sofas. To use Velcro, simply attach one strip to the underside of the couch cushion and the other one to the couch itself. Make sure to line them up so the cushions sit where you would like them to stay. Then attach the adhesive or sew the Velcro into place. Once secured, the cushions will stay put but will still be removable. It is important to note that this method does prevent you from flipping and rotating the cushions as part of your couch cleaning process since the Velcro must stay on the bottom of the cushions.
Sew on a Hook and Ring
If you aren’t afraid of doing a little sewing, a hook and ring system is a great way to ensure that your cushions stay put. To use this method, you will need to sew a small piece of fabric onto the cushion and onto the couch frame. Attach a small hook to one fabric piece and a small ring to the other. Once secured, simply hook the ring in place to secure the cushions. When using this option, be sure to choose a smooth, blunt hook to avoid any damage to the couch. Similar to using Velcro to secure couch cushions, you won’t be able to flip the cushions. However, you can still rotate the cushions if you position the hooks and rings in the same locations underneath and on each cushion.
Use a Couch Cover
The last solution for fixing sliding cushions is to use a couch cover. By hugging the couch, the cover will hold the cushions in place. This option also protects the whole couch from stains, spills, or snags. However, if slippery fabric material is the cause of your sliding cushions, you may still feel the cushions shifting around underneath the cover. For the best results, you may wish to combine a couch cover with a non-slip pad. This will keep the cushions from slipping both from the bottom and from the top, ensuring that your couch cushions stay neatly in place.
Keep Your Couch Cushions Under Control
Whether you are ready to sew on a hook and ring or want a simple fix with a non-slip pad, there is a solution for fixing sliding couch cushions. If your cushions are very slippery, you may wish to combine two of these methods to ensure a slip-free lounging experience. If you are skeptical about altering your couch, try starting with the least invasive option, such as a non-slip pad, and work up from there. With multiple options available, you can fix any sliding couch cushion to ensure nothing interferes with the comfort of your couch.
